Why Messenger contact deletion is awkward

Messenger pulls suggested contacts from your iPhone address book if you've granted Contacts access. There's no in-app 'delete this contact' — the way to remove someone from your Messenger suggestion list is to remove them from iPhone Contacts (or block them inside Messenger).

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Decide: hide, block, or delete?

Hide from suggestions: tap the contact in Messenger → choose Hide. Block from messaging you: tap → Block. Remove entirely from your iPhone address book: see step 2.

  2. 2

    Delete from iPhone Contacts

iOS Contacts → find the person → Edit → Delete Contact. Messenger drops them from suggestions on next launch.

  3. 3

    Bulk cleanup

If you have dozens of Messenger contacts from years of address-book buildup, Delete Contacts can clear them in minutes via the swipe interface. The iPhone Contacts list is the source — clean it once and Messenger reflects the change.

How Delete Contacts helps

Messenger surfaces every iPhone contact who's also on Facebook — that's how your iPhone address book becomes your Messenger contact list. Delete Contacts trims the iPhone side; Messenger only ever sees what you keep.

FAQ

Messenger contacts — FAQ

How do I delete contacts from Messenger only, not from my phone?
You can't fully — Messenger pulls suggestions from iPhone Contacts. The closest workarounds: revoke the Messenger Contacts permission entirely (iOS Settings → Messenger → Contacts → None) so it only shows people you've actually chatted with, or block individual contacts (long-press the chat → Block).
Why does Messenger keep suggesting people I don't talk to?
It cross-references your iPhone Contacts with Facebook's user database — anyone in both lists shows up as a suggestion. To stop seeing them, either delete them from iPhone Contacts (use Delete Contacts for bulk) or revoke Messenger's Contacts permission.
