Why Proton Mail contact deletion is awkward
Proton Mail keeps its own encrypted contacts list, separate from standard CardDAV servers. Proton offers iOS contact sync via their Bridge (paid) or direct CardDAV. Once synced, Proton contacts also live in iOS Contacts — and benefit from the same iPhone-side cleanup tools.
Step-by-step
- 1
Clean inside Proton Mail
mail.proton.me → Contacts → select contacts → Delete. Proton encrypts the contact list, so deletions happen client-side.
- 2
Verify iPhone sync state
iPhone Settings → Contacts → Accounts → [Proton via CardDAV or Bridge] → Contacts. Confirm sync is on if you want changes to propagate.
- 3
Use Delete Contacts on iPhone
Delete Contacts works the same regardless of provider. Cross-account duplicates (Proton + iCloud) are common after migration; the scanner catches them on-device.
How Delete Contacts helps
Proton users care about privacy by definition. Delete Contacts fits that worldview: on-device only, no contact data ever uploaded, verifiable in iOS Privacy Report. Same architecture philosophy as Proton itself.
