Why Slack contact deletion is awkward

Slack contacts split into three layers: (1) workspace members managed in Slack admin; (2) personal contacts in the Slack mobile app for DMing; (3) iPhone Contacts that Slack may have read if you granted permission. Each layer has its own deletion path.

Step-by-step

  1. 1

    Deactivate workspace members (admin only)

slack.com → admin → Manage members → ⋯ next to user → Deactivate account. They're removed from the workspace but their message history stays.

  2. 2

Stop Slack from reading iPhone Contacts

iPhone Settings → Slack → Contacts → None.

  3. 3

    Bulk-clean the iPhone source

Use Delete Contacts to trim. Work-adjacent contacts (vendors, freelancers, contractors) often pile up — easy to triage with the swipe interface.

How Delete Contacts helps

Once Slack is cleaned at the workspace level, the iPhone Contacts spill-over (vendors, contractors, ex-coworkers from past Slack workspaces) often remains. Delete Contacts handles that on-device.

FAQ

Slack contacts — FAQ

Can I remove a Slack workspace member without deleting their messages?
Yes. Deactivating a member preserves all their messages and files in the workspace. They just can't sign in anymore. To delete content too, Slack admins can use Slack's data-deletion APIs.
