Why Threads contact deletion is awkward
Threads is Meta's Twitter-like app, tied to your Instagram account. It can pull contacts via Instagram's existing permission grants or ask for new ones. Contact deletion happens via Meta's Account Center, which manages Threads, Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger contact uploads centrally.
Step-by-step
- 1
Open Meta Account Center
Threads app → Profile → ☰ → Settings & privacy → Account Center → Your information and permissions → Upload contacts.
- 2
Disconnect and delete
Toggle the upload off, then Delete to wipe the server-side copy. This also affects Instagram/Facebook/Messenger contact uploads since they share the same Account Center.
- 3
Revoke iOS access
iPhone Settings → Threads → Contacts → None.
- 4
Clean iPhone Contacts on-device
Use Delete Contacts to trim. Meta apps will have less to harvest if you ever re-enable any of them.
How Delete Contacts helps
Threads inherits Instagram's contact-syncing patterns — and your iPhone Contacts is the upstream source for all of them. Delete Contacts trims the source on-device, so no Meta app can quietly back-fill its database with your address book again.
